De Oertijd
De geschiedenis van weblogging staat op neder-l.nl en Wiki.
Reet herinnert zich; "Op een avond zat ik samen met De_Kolonel te zoeken naar een goede domeinnaam voor een soort weblog. Op een gegeven moment kwam ik op Retecool.com en ontstond het idee om een weblog te beginnen waar alleen maar hele leuke sites of juist hele slechte sites gelinkt werden, liefst zo ongenuanceerd mogelijk." De eerste Retecool post (23 Mei 2000) ging over de Midnightstar Huwelijksshow.
Met de Webcamlessons haalde Retecool internationaal de kranten, zoals The Register, maar ook de Volkskrant en Webwereld konden er wel om lachen. Retecool stopte (sort of), ook dat was nieuws in hyped en Webwereld. Weblogging definitief opgestaan, kopte Webwereld later. Meer museumstukken in het archief.
Het Fenomeen
Op Retecool heerst creatief en expressief taalgebruik. Zie bijvoorbeeld deze mirror van IJsqueen's weblog-woordenboek of de Kreten en uitspraken op deze Wiki. Integrale tekst van de Netwerkuitzending over weblogs staat op de site van Pierre Gorissen. Dat is toch geen Journalistiek riep: intermax. De boycot van Nedstat — de paginateller die het bezoek op Retecool niet bij kon houden — werd gecovered door nu.nl
Protest
Er waren een aantal momenten waarop Retecool er anders uitzag:
- Op zwart na de dood van Van Wieren (nu.nl)
- Op grijs om Auteursrecht (Webwereld)
Retewiki
- Het "Einde der tijden nadert: Retecool begint wiki" kopt PMM Blognoot van Planet.nl
Fotofucken
Fotofucken is een wekelijks terugkerend topic, maar ook een communicatievorm die dagelijks wordt ingezet in het forum en in de comments; dit haalde het nieuws wel vaker. De Volkskrant schreef er ooit een bijna-paginagroot artikel over. Ook technology.updates en planet.nl besteedden er aandacht aan. Tegenwoordig wordt onze fotofuck ook toegepast door andere weblogs zoals GeenStijl.

De Braatolizer
Spammers aanpakken doe je met Blues' Braatolizer, die ook vaak in het nieuws kwam:
De Maker, Blues, was te gast in editie.nl van RTL. Hier staat de video-registratie van dat interview.
De Braatolizer kun je ook inzetten op Duitse polls, waarop tientallen miljoenen Bild-lezers leken te verwachten dat Nederland het EK ging winnen:
- GeenStijl zoutjes en Retecoole enquêtes (De Telegraaf)
- Oranje populair bij Bild door actie Retecool (Smallzine)
- Nederlanders manipuleren internetpoll Duitse krant (nu.nl)
Radio538 was ook ooit de klos:

Een steeds terugkerend topic op Retecool zijn mensen die hebben geleerd hoe je een eenvoudige website in elkaar kunt zetten, en zich vervolgens aanbieden als de oplossing voor uw visitekaartje op internet, met een zo serieus mogelijke, doch kansloze website. Sommige "desingers" trekken dat niet zo goed:
- Nederlandse ISP dient klacht in tegen populaire weblog (webfactor.be)
- Hosting provider reports spamming weblog site to the Dutch police (DMeurope)
- Provider doet aangifte tegen weblog Retecool (nu.nl)
- Provider doet aangifte na actie Retecool.com (Webwereld) en Opnieuw onrust rond Retecool.com (Webwereld)

De Sprout affaire
Over de Sprout-affaire, waar Retecool niet waanzinnig trots op is en die vaak wordt aangehaald als voorbeeld van hoe slecht Retecool wel niet is, is opvallend genoeg niet zo gek veel te vinden. De foto's waren onherkenbaar slecht gescand (aliasing) maar de nieuwswaarde van de tekst was enorm en de discussies waren fel. Dat toont tegelijkertijd de genuanceerdheid van Retecool en haar bezoekers aan.

Het Amalia filmpje
Het Maxima+minima filmpje, uit een gejatte koninkijke camera, werd gelinkt door Reet en uitgezonden door SBS6, dat daarvoor beboet werd. Het maakt veel uit of je iets linkt of kopieert.

De Vogel Rok opnames
De Efteling was niet blij toen een filmpje van een van hun spookhuizen, gemaakt bij vol werklicht, online kwam:
De Talpa Foto Fuck Vrijdag
De juridische afdeling van John de Mol's nieuwe zender Talpa was niet erg blij met de associatie met "terrorisme, pornografie, incest, homoseksualiteit en de holocaust" en gelastte de redaktie om onmiddelijk deze FotoFuckVrijdag te staken. De ongelukkige formulering van Talpa's protest veroorzaakte nog een kleine rel. Opmerkelijk was dat niet veel later Talpa met een eigen wedstrijd kwam waarbij deelnemers aan de slag mogen met het Talpa logo. In reactie vond er niet veel later alsnog een FotoFuckVrijdag plaats die Talpa nog harder op de hak nam.

Durka Durka Mohammed Kebab FFV
Een Deense krant postte in december een aantal kritische cartoons met Mohammed de Profeet in de hoofdrol. De Islamitische wereld viel erover en na een aanloopperiode van vijf maanden kwam de hystherie op 1 Februari 2006 tot een voorlopig hoogtepunt. Er werd gedanst op Deense vlaggen en er waren brandjes in Deense Ambassades. Ondertussen was er druk overleg op het Retecool HQ. Gaan we het doen? De kogel ging door de kerk, het onderwerp werd: "Gebruik historische afbeeldingen van de Profeet om alledaagse producten aan te prijzen." Anderhalf etmaal later barste de hectiek los. Terwijl de rokende server de FFV bijdrages ontving en alle data naar de bezoekers stond te pompen, zochten de media en andere fora naar een manier om te dealen met Retecool. In de Nederlandse media laaide de discussie over de vrijheid van meningsuiting op. De redactie van Retecool maakte zijn eigen overweging: "Retecool staat niet achter alle inzendingen van de huidige Foto Fuck Vrijdag editie, maar gezien de actualiteiten van dit moment lijkt het ons niet juist om moderatie/censuur toe te passen." De Darfur actie
Retecool zette zich in December 2004 in voor de Darfur Actie van 3FM. In ruil daarvoor kwamen DJ's Giel Beelen, Claudia de Breij en Wouter v.d. Goes gastloggen. Het jaar daarop, in december 2005 werd ook de Congo-actie ondersteund.
